Week 1 Review

Army V Penn: Final 24-21

Player of the game: Jr DB Ryan Leach 5 tackles 2int 2pbu

These two teams did not disappoint, playing one of the two games that went down to the wire this weekend. New Army QB Jr Ryan Sullivan’s 194 passing yards were the most in week 1. He seems to have quickly built a good rapport with top WR Sr Tom Williamson who hauled in 5rec for 81 yards, the 2nd most in week 1. LB Tate Blessinger set the tone finishing with 7 tackles and 2TFL.DB Ryan Leach had 5 tackles, but he ultimately changed the game with his 2 interceptions. Penn was led by star QB Eddie Jenkins. He threw for 176 yards and ran for 126 with 3 touchdowns. But the army defense kept the pressure on forcing him to throw 3 interceptions. New starting RB Soph LaQuan McKever burst on to the scene rushing for 109 yards and hauling in 2 receptions for 20 yards. Penn’s defensive stars showed up as well. LB Matteo Murgia led the team with 10 tackles and 1TFL. Jr  DB/LB Aaron Johnson put on a show finishing with 9 tackles 3TFL and 2 sacks. Johnson is someone teams will have to watch out for, I believe he is the best player on Penn’s defense and one of the best players in the league. Johnson and Jenkins will lead Penn as they try to bounce back against rival Cornell next week while Army looks to keep the train rolling as they take on rival Navy at home.

Cornell v Alderson Broaddus: Final 38-21

Player of the game: Sr RB Will Griffen 114 yards 4 TD 6rec 24 yards

Though they didn’t win, Saturday was a historic day for AB. It will forever be remembered as the day they played their inaugural game and their welcoming into the league. Fr QB Joshua Derocher threw the first passing touchdown in school history to Fr WR Tyler Smith. Smith also had 133 kick return yards on just 3 attempts, his longest one of the day was a 91 yarder. Fr RB Gabe Ray didn’t put up that many yards but he scored the first rushing touchdown in school history.Fr LB Johnathan Curry set the tone with 7 tackles and 1 TFL while Sr DL Matt Dillion finished with 6 tackles 2tfl and 1 sack. Fr DB Tysean Taylor also made history by getting the first interception for AB. After a successful start the experience for Cornell kicked in.  New starting QB Jr Aneesh Agrawal played a sound game. He threw for 128 yards with a 66% completion percentage and only 1int. The game was ultimately won by Sr RB Will Griffen who dominated the young team finishing with 114yards 4TD 6rec 24yards.  There wasn’t anything the AB defense could do against the experienced back with a mature o-line. Soph LB Matt Peck led the team in tackles with 6 but the lack of numbers for the rest of the team is a result of the Cornell D having a overwhelming advantage in time of possession, 36:19 – 23:41, as well as limiting AB to a 22% 3rd down conversion percentage. Cornell takes on rival Penn at home while AB takes on Post at home.

STAC v Navy: Final 17 – 42

Player of the game: Jr DL Luke Kustra 9tackles 4TFL 1.5 sacks

St. Thomas Aquinas made their first ever trip to Maryland to take on Navy. Despite the loss STAC made their presence felt. The Kiel McKenzie era started off shaky but there are positives in his performance. The Soph QB threw for 161 yards 1TD and 2int. Fr WR/DB Ernest Stallworth dazzled in his very first game finishing with 5 rec 93 yards and 1TD. He also had 2 tackles on defense and 1int which is already maybe the catch of the year(/ttps://sprintfootball.game.blog/2019/09/15/week-1-review/). Fr DB Sheriffh Bittaye made some noise in his first game as well finishing with 10 tackles and Sr DB Malyk Michel had 2 tackles and 1int which he ran back for a 43 yards pick six. The navy offense came in with more of their age-old tradition of run first football. Soph RB Matthew McGee led the team with 96 yards and 1td. The navy passing attack however was more inconsistent. The combination of Jr Braydan Chmiel and Jr Jake Foss combined for 113 yards 2TD and 3int with a 46% completion percentage. Now the Navy defense picked up where they left off last season and put on a dominating performance. Jr DL Luke Kustra finished with 9 tackles 4TFL and 1.5 sacks and star DL/LB Troy Monroe finished with 6 tackles 1.5TFL and 1int. Navy goes on the road to take on rival Army while STAC welcomes Caldwell to NY.

Post v Chestnut Hill: Final 6-19

Player of the game: Soph DB Ryan Jakeman 6 tackles 3TFL 1sack

Post came down to Chestnut Hill for the first time in program history. Soph QB Nick D’Elia made his debut and put on a decent performance finishing with 134 yards 1TD and 1 int. Soph WR Akairyn Dumas was the top receiver finishing with 8 rec 69 yards and 1TD. D’Elia and Akairyn did everything they could for the Post offense but only managed to score 1 TD. The defense was led by Jr DL Hansley Dalembert who was by far the most dominate DL on both teams. He finished with 8 tackles 1TFL 1sack and 1 FF. Soph DB Jaylen Rivera was also dominate finishing with 6 tackles 1TFL and 1pbu. I was at this game, so I saw this performance first hand. He blew my expectations for him out of the water and he’s now put himself on the map when it comes to the top DBs particularly Safeties. Chestnut Hill had some guys step up, but they were led by their usual suspects. Sr QB Mike Marino threw for 115 yards and 2TDs. Star Sr WR Domoree Hill finished with 4rec 77 yards and 1TD. Sr RB Sef Penson was the leading rusher finishing with 76 yards despite some break downs with the blocking. On defense new Alphas emerged for the Griffins. The DB duo of Jr Nate Moser and Jr Terrell Bush played excellent once again. They combined for 4 tackles and 2pbu but there were numerous plays they made that directly contributed to incompletions. Soph DB Ryan Jakeman dominated the run and pass finishing with 6tackles 3TFL and 1Sack( You can see my interview with Jakeman @CSFLHub on twitter). Post heads to AB in West Virginia while CHC goes up to Mansfield

Mansfield v Caldwell : Final Mansfield 20- Caldwell 21

Player of the game: Jr DL Randy Antenor 6 tackles 4TFL 4sacks

This was a rematch I was looking forward to and it didn’t disappoint. The game was controlled early by Mansfield Fr QB Koby Peacock made his debut throwing for 163 yards 2TD and 2int. The combo of Jr RB David Butler and Soph RB Jayden Walker combined for 85 yards and 1 TD. Fr WR John Rogers and Sr WR Dj Mclean combined for 7rec 90 yards and 2TD. Mansfield defense was led by not just one person but their entire DB core. Soph Nicholas Muro, Soph Dajuan Buie, Fr Terrance Quaker, and Jr Kayin Berger all recorded a interception. For Caldwell the game started rough. Star ATH Carl Watson took a back seat as So RB Armani Bermudez 70 yards 1TD and Jr Jared Dockett 2rec 60 yards 1td led the offense today. Soph QB Tajae’ Irby threw for 156 yards 2Td and 4int but Caldwell still managed to hang on. The defense stepped up huge making many crucial plays. Jr DL was the most dominate player in the game finishing with 6tackles 4TFL and 4 sacks. The Mansfield OL had no answer for him. The game was sealed at the end by Jr DB Nathan Dikwa-Nkrumah who caught an interception when Mansfield was trying to drive down the field. He also laid some big hits on Mansfield receivers for the entire game. Mansfield welcomes CHC to the mountains for a home game and Caldwell goes up to NY to face STAC.
