Week 2 Review

Army v Alderson Broaddus: 54-0 Army WIN

Player of the Game: Sr DL Alex Sobeski 4tackles 2TFL 2sacks

Army took their first trip down to West Virginia and came out with the win. The Army offense was firing on all cylinders, so much so that both quarterbacks JC Watson and Mikal Willeke threw for a combined 218yards 5TD. Jr WR Donovan Mannion finished the afternoon with 5rec 87yards 3TD. Mannion’s 3TDs ties him for 3rd most in CSFL history. The Army rushing attack added 182 yards on the ground. Multiple backs had at least five rushing attempts continuing the running back by committee trend that Army has shown this season. The Army defense shut down AB in every way. Multiple defenders got in on the action and the well-balanced team effort prevented AB from putting up any points. Sr DL Alex Sobeski continues to dominate coming off the edge finishing with 4tackles 2TFL 2sacks. Army heads back home to welcome Navy next week.

AB struggled to generate any type of offense. The offensive line has continued to struggle giving up 15 sacks in the first two games. The front 5 will have to improve if AB hopes to have any success this season. Jr QB Timmy Tillman only threw for 39 yards but the young QB can definitely play. If he can get some more help, I know he can show that he is one of the more talented quarterbacks in the league. Jr WR Shamon Gennes was the only offensive threat for AB finishing with 3rec 37yards. The AB defense did little to slow down the Army offense. Fr LB Darrien Bortey continues to be the lone star on defense at this point in the season. He finished with 16tackles 2TFL. This is Bortey’s second straight game with at least 15 tackles. His 16 tackle performance is also good for the 5th most in CSFL history. The young LB looks to be a budding star for Alderson Broaddus.  AB hits the road next week to meet up with STAC.

Navy v CHC: 54-0 NAVY WIN

Player of the Game: Sr RB Matthew McGee 161yards 2TD

Navy took a commanding lead early in the game and never looked back. The ground attack for Navy was in midseason form rushing for a staggering 347yards. Sr RB Matthew McGee led the way rushing for a career high 161 yards. With a dominate offensive line McGee should continue to be a menace to defenses across the CSFL. Soph QB Brandon Atwood had a very efficient night throwing for 107yards 2TD. Soph WR Andrew Margiotta continues to prove that he is a top-notch receiving treat finishing with 3rec 80yards 2TD. This is the second straight 2TD game for Margiotta. The Navy defense shared the love on Friday night. 10 defenders had at least 3 tackles. Jr LB Paul Kuehler led the way with 7tackles 1.5TFL 1sack. Navy hits the road next week to travel to West Point to play Army.

Chestnut Hill couldn’t get anything going against Navy. The Griffins only had 129yards of total offense and failed to score a point. Soph QB Lonnie Cebulski only threw for 46 yards before his night was over. Fr QB Connor Rohrbach threw for 59 yards in his first game action this season.  Jr WR Schneider Juste did what he could on offense finishing with a career high 5rec 37yards. Defensively the Griffins were led by brothers Colby and Cam Goldsmith who combined for 19tackles 2.5TFL. Chestnut Hill heads back home to welcome Mansfield as they look to get their season back on track.

STAC v Caldwell: 35-32 CALDWELL WIN

Player of the Game: Jr QB Frank DeMaio 99yards 2TD 84rushing yards 2TD

The Cougars opened up their season with a great offensive display. Led by Jr QB Frank DeMaio, who was responsible for 4 touchdowns, the Cougars generated 298 yards of total offense. Sr RB Carl Watson added 84 yards on the ground and 24 receiving yards. He finished the night with 108 all purpose yards and 2TD. Defensively Caldwell gave the STAC passing attack all they could handle forcing 4 interceptions. Fr DB Amajuwan Murray, Fr DB Kyle Readus, and Fr DB Patrick Sinegra all recorded an interception with Sinegra snagging 2. Murray also led the defense with 6 tackles. While STAC did generate a lot of offense through the air, these young DBs capitalized on opportunities that came their way. Caldwell hits the road next week to head up to Cornell.

The STAC passing attack was firing on all cylinders aside from the turnovers. Fr QB Dennis Riordan threw for a career high 329 yards and 5TD. Riordan’s 329 yards is the most passing yards in STAC history and his 5TD ties him with 2018 grad Luke Sullivan for the most TDs in a game in STAC history. He is also tied for 2nd for the most passing TDs in a game in CSFL history.  The record setting day didn’t stop there for the Spartans. Jr WR Mahki Matthews and Fr WR Hassan Blakney both had career nights. Matthews finished with 11rec 88 yards 3TD. His 11rec are good for the  3rd most in CSFL history and the most receptions in a game in STAC history. His 3tds also ties his for the 3rd most in CSFL history. Blankey finished with 8rec 191yards 2TD. His 191 yards are the most in STAC history and ties him for the 6th most yards in a game in CSFL history.  Sr DL Tyreke Smith and Fr LB Robert Nieto combined for 16tackles 4.5TFL 1sack to lead the Spartans defense. STAC heads back home next week to welcome Alderson Broaddus to NY for the first time.

Penn v Mansfield: 55-28 PENN WIN

Player of the Game: Sr RB Laquan McKever 152yards 3TD

Penn scored on the first drive and didn’t look back. The three headed monster of McKever, McCaffrey, and Klaus proved their status as maybe the most dangerous trio of play makers in the league. Sr RB Laquan Mckever rushed for a season high 152 yards and a career high 3TD. Sr WR Brendan McCaffrey followed up his career night last week with a 5rec 163yards 2TD performance. Sr TE Ben Klaus had his best game of the season finishing with 4rec 78yards 2TD. Jr QB Andrew Paolini found his playmakers when it counted and dropped some dimes along the way. Saturdays 270yard 4TD performance is his 2nd straight game with at least 250yards and 2TDs. Fr LB Jake Inserra had a career night with 16tackles 0.5TFL. His 16tackles are tied for the 5th most in a single game in CSFL history. Penn gets a break next week before they welcome Cornell to Philadelphia.

Although they didn’t get the win Mansfield continues to show how dangerous they can be. For the second week in a row the MU offense was led by Fr QB Cahsid Raymond. The electrifying QB finished with 238yards 2TD 192rushing yards 2TD. This is the second week in a row the young QB has recorded 4TDs while also being the team’s leading rusher. Raymond also did a great job spreading the ball around to his young receivers. He hit five receivers on the night and four of them had at least 40yards. The MU defense struggled to stop Penn’s big playmakers. The defensive line struggled getting penetration and putting pressure on Andrew Paolini. One of the bright spots on defense was Jr LB Matt Robert. The star LB finished with 12 tackles 0.5TFL. Since he entered the league in 2019 he has yet to have a game with less than 9 tackles. MU takes a trip down to Philadelphia next week to visit Chestnut Hill.
