Army v Navy: Navy win 27-13
Player of the game: Soph DL David Niski 4tackles 2.5TFL 2.5sacks
Navy wins their first home game of the 2022 season. The Navy offense couldn’t generate as much offense as they did last week vs Chestnut Hill. Jr QB Brandon Atwood threw for 76yards 1TD and ran for 56yards. Atwood has shown he can be much more mobile than he was last season and should be a reliable ball carrier for the Navy offense for the rest of the year. Sr RB Alex Totta added 74 yards rushing yards to lead the team. Defensively the Navy had a few guys lead the way. Jr LB Jack Costigan led the team with 13 tackles 1TFL 0.5sack . Upfront Jr DL Devyn Martin added 6 tackles with 1.5TFL and Soph DL David Niski finished with 4tackles 2.5TFL 2.5sacks. The two defensive ends terrorized the Army backfield all night. Sr DB Lane Condie had 5tackles and maybe the biggest play of the game when he took a interception 28yards to the house for.Navy heads back up the east coast to visit Caldwell next week.
Despite having more total offensive yards than Navy, the Black Knights couldn’t overcome two early turnovers. Jr QB Mikal Willeke threw for 226yards 1TD 2int. Willeke would’ve had even more yardage if it wasn’t for a few drops from the Army receiving core. Soph RB Henry Beck and Jr RB Ryan Connors combined for 148yards on the ground. The pair both finished with over 4 yards per carry. Sr WR Donovan Mannion bounced back from a couple of early drops. The star receiver led the game with 11rec 90yards 1TD. Jr LB Luke Gigliotti was a force in the middle leading the game with 14 tackles. Sr CB Sam Whipple didn’t see much action but when he did he did not allow a single catch. The Army hits the road next week to visit Penn in Philadelphia.
Penn v STAC: STAC win 21-17
Player of the Game: Soph QB Ryan Kenny 180yards 3TD
STAC took home the win in this tightly contested first ever matchup between these two teams. This was the first time we got to see Soph QB Ryan Kenny and he did not disappoint. The young QB threw 180yards 3TD 1int in his debut at quarterback. The first was to Jr WR Phillip Meikle in the red zone. Meikle went up and climbed the ladder for a beautiful catch and throw. The second was to Jr WR Luke Mckenna to give STAC the lead in the 3rd quarter. The last came on a 4th quarter drive to take the lead. Soph WR Hassan Blakney took it in to give STAC the final TD of the game. Jr RB Bo Moroney and Jr RB Reno Molina had a great day running the ball. The two backs combined for 111yards. Sr LB Sheriffh Bittaye led the way for the defense with 9tackles 3TFL 2sacks. The versatile senior will be a player to watch for the rest of the season. STAC hits the road next week to visit AB.
Penn struck first and had the lead at halftime but couldn’t put it away in this first ever meeting between these two teams. Sr QB Andrew Paolini found Fr WR Brandon Graves on the first drive of the game. Paolini hung in the pocket and took a good shot but still delivered a beautiful ball down the field to Graves. Paolini finished the game with 177yards 1TD. Soph WR Jake Wang led the receiving core with 5rec 89yards. Fr RB Levi Ganes ran the rock with authority for Penn. The young back had a huge run in the 3rd quarter to flip the field for the Penn offense. Ganes had 76 yards on the day. Paolini punched it in on a QB sneak soon after to give Penn their last lead of the day. On defense Soph LB Jake Inserra led the team with 14tackles 1.5TFL 1sack while Fr LB Charles Tauckus had the biggest game of his young career finishing with 13tackles 1.5TFL 1int. Penn heads home to welcome Army to Franklin Field next week.
Caldwell vs Alderson Broaddus: CU win 24-3
Player of the game: Sr DL Michael Lohrman 4tackles 2.5TFL 2.5sacks
Caldwell starts the year off 2-0 after their first road win of the season. The offense wasn’t clicking the way we are used to seeing but they did enough to win the game. Sr QB Frank DeMaio only had 8 completions but 2 of them went for touchdowns. Fr RB Devon Turner had a decent day leading the team in rushing with 50yards. Defensively there were multiple guys who had an impact. The biggest came from Soph DL Cory Campbell who finished with 4tackles 2TFL 1 sack and Sr DL Michael Lohrman who finished with 4tackles 2.5TFL 2.5sacks. Up front the Caldwell defensive line could not be stopped. They held AB to -48rushing yards as a team. Soph DB Ethan Edwards helped put the game away with a 68yard pick six in the 3rd quarter Soph K Michael Casalin did his part to win the day nailing two field goals to help seal the game. Caldwell heads back home next week to take on the Navy.
AB couldn’t get much going in this one. Both AB quarterbacks combined for less than 100yards and each threw 1int. The rushing attack for the Battlers continues to be an issue as well. This is the 2nd week in a row AB has finished with negative rushing yards. Soph WR Blake Baxter was the most consistent offensive player for AB. The young receiver led the game with 6rec 47yards. This is the second game in a row that Baxter has had at least 40 receiving yards. Soph LB Jabari Gittens-Ampadu and Jr DL Austin Bradley were two of the bright spots for the AB defense. The two combined for 9tackles 2TFL 2sacks. AB stays home to welcome STAC to WV next week.
CHC v Mansfield:Mansfield win 41-20
Player of the Game: Soph QB Cahsid Raymond 295passing yards 3TD 98rushing yards 1TD
Mansfield bounced back big with the win over CHC. Soph QB Cahsid Raymond had a great day throwing for 295yards 3TD and adding 98rushing yards with 1 TD. Raymond made every type of throw you could ask for from a starting quarterback while also being the team’s leading rusher. Soph WR Latrenton Randle had the biggest game of his career finishing with 5rec 104yards. Sr RB Terrance Quaker found the endzone for the first time since his freshman season. He finished with 12rushing yards 2rec 52yards 1TD. It’s great to see him contributing to winning after having multiple injuries throughout his career. Defensively the Mansfield front was too much for CHC .6 different players had at least 1TFL. Sr LB Matt Robert led the team with 9tackles adding 1TFL while Soph LB Gavin Hinman added 8tackles 2TFL 2sacks. Upfront Sr DL Chase Moser was a consistent force finishing with 7tackles 3TFL 1sack. Mansfield hits the road next week to visit Cornell.
Chestnut Hill put up points but could keep pace with the Mansfield offense. Fr QB Anthony Cancellare improved on his week 1 performance throwing for 133yards 1TD. The Griffins biggest take away from the game was definitely the running game. Soph RB Anthony Broderick led the team with 85rushing yards 1TD and Fr RB Zyier Pannell got it going late adding 61rushing yards. Soph WR Xavier Hendricks led the team in receiving yards and receptions finishing with 5 for 61 yards. Defensively CHC couldn’t hold Mansfiled for most of the night. Fr DL DJ Francis led the team in tackles with 6. CHC heads back to Philadelphia for a bye week before they take on Penn at Franklin Field.
MSFL
SMWC v QU: SMWC win 21-7
Player of the game:Fr LB Nolen Noel 16tackles
SMWC rolls for their second win to start the season. Fr QB Brennon Landry returned to action after missing the end of last week’s game vs CCSJ. The young QB threw for 91yards 2TD 1int and ran for 51yards. Not the best game but enough to get the win.He was also the leading rusher for SMWC. Defensively the SMWC front seven were flying around making plays all over the field. Fr LB Nolen Noel led the team in tackles with a game high 16. Right behind him was Fr LB Jake Skinner who added 11tackles with 2TFL. The line of scrimmage was dominated by Fr DL/LB Hunter Cardwell who finished with 8tackles 2TFL 3sacks. This is the second game in a row for Cardwell with at least 2TFL. SMWC stays home again to welcome Midway next week.
Quincy played hard on both sides of the ball but couldn’t keep pace with SMWC. Sr QB Taylor Klusmeyer threw for a career high 171yards but threw 0TD 1int. However, he did score the lone Quincy TD on the day with a short TD run. Fr WR Camden Pye was the main offensive target on the day finishing with 9rec 114yards. This is Pye’s first 100+ yard receiving game. Defensively Quincy had a few guys step up. Fr DB Cordell Walker led the team with 8tackles 1sack. Fr DB Landyn Smith made an impact in the secondary finishing with 2tackles 1int 3pbu. Quincy heads home for their first home game vs Bellarmine.
Bellarmine v Fontbonne: Bellarmine win 14-6
Player of the Game: Fr RB/DB Brenden Reid 118rushing yards 1rec 9yards/ 3tackles 1int
Bellarmine wins another close one to start their season 2-0. Fr QB Dylan Gough had a decent afternoon throwing for 107yards 1TD 1int. His touchdown came on a beautiful throw to Fr WR Joshua Bivens. For the second week in a row the Bellarmine running game won them the day. Fr RB Brenden Reid ran for 118yards. He saved his best for last on a 64yard run to seal the game for the Knights. Reid saved the day on the previous play on defense getting the interception to prevent a Midway comeback. Fr DB Tavius Francis had a bigtime play as well. The young DB took a 40yard interception to the house to put the first points on the board for Bellarmine. The Knights head back on the road next week to take on Quincy.
The Fontbonne offense continues to struggle as they search for their first win of the season. The Griffins played two Fr quarterbacks in hopes of generating some offense. The duo combined for 111yards 1TD 3int. Fr RB Darrion White led the team in rushing for the second week in a row. The young back had 40yards on the afternoon. Fr ATH Chris Reckel led the team in receiving with 5rec 55yards and Fr WR Andrew Webb scored the only touchdown for the Griffins with a 27yard receiving TD. Defensively is where the Griffins continue to shine. Fr DL Avion Bass and Isaiah Sanders are proving to be an impressive combination. Bass finished with 13tackles 0.5TFL while Sanders added 12 tackles 4TFL 1.5sacks. Fontbonne heads back home to take on CCSJ.
CCSJ v Midway: CCSJ win 35-0
Player of the Game: Fr RB Jonathan Flemings 163yards 1TD
CCSJ secured their first win of the season with a strong running game. Fr QB Blaze Cano only threw for 52 yards but had a great day on the ground running for 92yards. Fr RB Jonathan Flemings continues his impressive freshman season with his second 100+yard rushing game finishing this one with 163rushing yards 1TD. Flemings is proving to be the catalyst for this CCSJ offense thus far this season. Fr WR Markehi Whitlock was the lone presence in the receiving core hauling in 3 receptions for 47yards. The CCSJ defense blanketed Midway holding them to 0 points. Fr DB Isaac Hegwood had the biggest play of the night returning a 45yard interception to the house to close out the game. CCSJ hits the road for the first time this season to take on Fontbonne.
Midways continues to look for their identity as a team. After scoring 15 points last week in a tightly contested game the Eagles went scoreless this week. Passing the ball was a challenge for Midway’s two quarterbacks. The pair combined for 93yards 1int. As a team Midway has yet to have a ball carrier rush for over 30 yards. Offensively the Eagles will need to find ways to generate yards as they look for their first win of the season. Defensively Fr LB Shane Lane led the team with 9 tackles while Fr LB Tristan Berrios and Fr DB Connor Cook both added 8tackles a piece. Midway hits the road again next week to visit SMWC.
