Week 1 Review
MSFL
Fontbonne v Quincy: Fontbonne win 25-20
Player of the game- Soph ATH Chris Reckel 60rushing yards 2rec 82 receiving yards 1TD( 142 All Purpose yards)
Fontbonne came out swinging to kickoff the new MSFL season. Some new names started off their careers with a bang as Fontbonne secures the first win of the season. Fr QB Temaj Taylor threw for 227yards 2TD. Accuracy is always an issue early in the season especially with a young QB making his first start but Taylor still managed to find his playmakers for big plays down the field. One of those new playmakers is Fr WR David Collins who led the team with 3rec 117yards 1 TD. A familiar face was the consistent catalysts the proved to be the difference for the Griffins. Soph ATH Chris Reckel finished the game with 142 all purpose yards and 1TD. Reckel showed that he can be a dynamic multi purpose playmaker in the MSFL and this season should be no different. Defensively Soph LB Avion Bass set the tone finishing with a game high 16tk and 1.5tfl. Bass is a player to watch whenever you turn on a Fontbonne game. Fr DB Jeremiah Dorsey also made some noise. He finished with 8tk 1tfl 2pbu and 2ff. Next week Fontbonne heads home to play Midway.
Quincy fought back in the second half but didn’t have enough time to complete to comeback. The hawks showed off a new and improved running game led by Jr RB CJ Jackson who finished with an impressive 139yards 3TD with 2rec for 15yards.To have a game like that against a defense with some top tier talent is very impressive. Soph QB Nick Manzo looks better heading into his second season finishing the game with 202 passing yards. Manzo’s play will be a crucial part of the Hawks offense throughout the year. The Quincy offense has definitely improved heading into year two. Defensively the hawks showed flashes of promise but couldn’t keep points off the board early. Jr LB Ray Lingard led the team with 5tk adding 2pbu. Fr DL Josiah Pasley showed some promise finishing with 4tk 2.5tfl. The Hawks hit the road next week to head to Ohio to visit Walsh.
Midway v Walsh: Midway win 29-26
Player of the game- Fr RB Matthew Young 140rushing yards 2rec 27yards
Midway secured their first win in program history with their victory over Walsh. It was a close one all the way through but the slight edge in experience proved to be the difference in this one. Jr QB Connor Baker threw for 121yards in his debut. Unfortunately he did not return in the second half but Midway managed to hang on. A big reason for the win was they play of Fr RB Matthew Young who ran for a program record 140 yards. Young seemed to get first downs and create big plays whenever the team needed to get going. Soph WR Rudy Loomis led the team with 4rec for 78yards. The Midway defense had a well balanced attack with Fr DB Camron McDonald leading the way with 4tk 2pbu 1ff 2int. Midway hits the road again next week to visit Fontbonne
Walsh showed a lot of fight in their inaugural game. The very first play of the game was a huge 85yard KR TD by Soph WR Jalen Gordon. Then came the usual team ups and downs that happen in first game in program history. The duo of Soph QB Kyree Fox and Soph QB Nathan Gager combined for 191yards 3TD but also 4int. Fr WR Keion Hawkins-Simms was the favorite target of both quarterbacks. Hawkins-Simms finished with 5rec a game high 100yards and 1TD. On the defensive side of the ball Fr DL Alikwon Harris led the game with with 9tk 1.5tfl 0.5sack 1fr 1pbu. His teammate Fr Tre’Quan Taylor was a menace finishing with 6tk 2.5tfl 2sacks. Walsh stays home next week as they welcome Quincy to Ohio.
Bellarmine v Oakland City: Bellarmine win 43-23
Player of the game- Soph RB Brenden Reid 232yards 4TD
Bellarmine came into this one as the more experienced team. That along with outstanding performances from their best players proved to be to much for Oakland City to overcome. The passing attack was not one of the things that won them the game. Fr QB Luke Worley only threw for 6yards with 1 int. The passing game will have to drastically improve if they hope to make a legit run this season. Luckily Bellarmine has maybe the best player in the league and one of the best players in all of sprint football in Soph RB Brenden Reid. The star RB ran for a staggering 232yards with 4rushing TD. Whenever the Knights needed yards or a big play they called on Reid to tout the pill or be a lead blocker for some of the other playmakers like Fr RB Derrik Gant who ran for 67yards 2TD. Defensively the tackles and plays were spread out pretty evenly. Fr LB Luke Jackson and Soph DL Jordan Haywood were the only two guys to get some tackles for loss and sacks. The pair combined for 5tk 5tfl 4sacks. Bellarmine heads back home to welcome CCSJ.
Oakland City showed how dangerous they can be as one of two new teams in the MSFL this season. Just like Walsh there were tons of highs and lows but that is to be expected in your first game as a program. Fr QB Jacob Lee showed some flashes throwing for 192yards and rushing for 45yards with a rushing TD but throwing 4ints didn’t help the team succeed. Fr WR Austin Davenport led the team with 6rec for 88yards. The Oakland City defense had some great performances from their young guys. Fr DL A’Moses Wells led the team with 12tk 1tfl 1sack. Fr LB Andre Kirkland had 7tk 4tfl 1sack. Fr DB Kanye Johnson, who would’ve been my player of the game if Oakland City pulled off the comeback, finished with 10tk 3tfl 1sack 1int 2pbu. Id have to do some major digging but I don’t recall to many games where a player had 10 or more tackles with at least 1tfl 1sack and 1int. The young DB is certainly in rare company with this performance. Oakland City stays home to welcome SMWC next week.
SMWC v CCSJ: SMWC win 28-10
Player of the game- Fr DL/LB Di’lon Harvey 9tk 5tfl 1.5sacks
The final game of opening weekend was everything we could have hoped for. In the end SMWC took the W in a rematch of last years championship game. Both offenses struggled early but SMWC got things going late. Jr QB Jeremiah Tosky had an up and down first game but played well enough by the end to get the win. He finished the night with 139passing yards 1TD 2int 57rushing yards 2rushing TD. A well balanced rushing attack saw 6 Pomeroy’s contribute to a 236yard rushing game. Soph WR Devron Johnson led the team with 3rec for 89yards. Defensively Fr DL/LB Di’lon Harvey terrorized the Crimson Wave offense finishing with 9tk 5tfl 1sack. Right behind him was Fr DB Austin Petrillo and Fr LB Jesse Lara. The pair combined for 14tk 5tfl 0.5sack. SMWC hits the road again next week to visit newcomer Oakland City.
CCSJ was in this one at halftime but couldn’t overcome the offense surge of the Pomeroys in the second half. Like many teams across the league the Crimson wave had a new quarterback making his debut. Fr QB Javeion Lewis threw for 115yards 2int. The wave struggled throwing the ball and the running game wasn’t much help either. CCSJ finished the game with 17 positive rushing yards as a team. Fr WR Jacob Oehmen was the leading receiver on the night finishing with 7rec for 76yards.The Wave defense kept them in the game early despite SMWC firepower on offense. Soph LB Trevor Busse led the team with 9tk 0.5tfl 1ff. Soph DB Nino Barbosa who scored the first points of the night had 2tk 1pbu 2int one of which was a pick six. The Wave begin their 3 game road trip at Bellarmine next week.
CSFL
Caldwell v Cornell: Caldwell win 16-14
Player of the game- Soph RB Devon Turner 109 rushing yards 1rec 12yards
Caldwell won this one with their usually game winning formula. Have a strong running game and play tough defense. The running game is spearheaded by Soph RB Devon Turner who ran for a game high 109yards. Turner picked up right where he left off last season as the Rookie of the Year. His second season should be full of dynamic runs as Caldwell’s lead ball carrier. Sr QB Frank DeMaio had a textbook game as well.145yards with 2TD is just the type of game we’ve come to expect for DeMaio. Defensively the Cougars held down Cornell for most of the game only briefly giving the the Reds some hope. Sr DL Darien Davis led the team with 8tk 1tfl 1sack. However the Cougars secondary really stole the show. Jr DB Kyle Readus had 3pbu to go with 3tk and Jr DB Gennaro Longobardi had 5tk with 2int. Caldwell is looking as strong as ever heading into week two. The Cougars head home to welcome CHC next week.
Cornell debuted their new and improved team but despite a valiant effort they couldn’t get the win. Sr Cooper Wise who transitioned from DB was given the nod as the starting QB. He threw for 152 yards but also threw 3int. Sr RB Ralph Fleuranvil ran for a team high 66yards with 1TD. 2nd half rushing TDs from Fleuranvil and Wise gave Cornell some hope late but weren’t enough to get the win. Defensively Sr LB Billy Turner led the team with a game high 11tk 1tfl 2pbu. The Cornell defense had trouble getting to DeMaio finishing the game with zero sacks. The late push and low scoring game could be a sign of good things to come for Cornell but that remains to be seen. Next week Cornell hits to road to visit Penn.
CHC v Penn: CHC win 27-10
Player of the game- Soph QB Anthony Cancellare 344yards 3TD 17rushing yards
CHC secured a win against Penn for just the second time in program history. Friday night they did so in explosive fashion. Soph QB Anthony Cancellare threw for a program record 344yards with 3TD one of which was a 99yarder which is the longest touchdown in program history. The sophomore QB looks much more comfortable in his second season at the helm. His improvement will pay dividends to the Griffins throughout the season. Fr WR Kindrik Branch and Soph WR Kyree Griffin both had monster games. Long receptions and one-handed catches we both common occurrences for the two all night. The pair combined for 11rec 233yards 2TD. The CHC defense played their part in the victory as well. Soph LB Lex Williams led the team with 11tk 1tfl 1pbu. Despite allowing some circus catches to the Penn receivers the Griffins secondary proved to be the deciding factor. Soph DB Justin Oppong had 3tk 1pbu but more importantly 2ints with one being a pick six. CHC hits the road next week to visit Caldwell in Jersey.
Despite some momentum swings Penn couldn’t get much to go in their favor in this one. Jr QB Ty Scherer threw for 130yards with 2int. Scherer’s legs were the most consistent offensive weapon the Quakers had. The new starting QB led the team in rushing yards with 65yards. Outside of two acrobatic catches from Sr Danny Coale and Fr Andy Falletta the Penn offense couldn’t do much to move the ball. The front 7 for Penn did what they could to keep the game close. Soph LB Charles Tauckus looks even better heading into his second season. The young LB led the team with 10tk 1.5tfl. He’ll be one of the bright spots for this defense as they try to improve throughout the season. Penn heads home next week to play their main rival Cornell.
Navy v STAC: Navy win 27-14
Player of the Game- Sr QB Brandon Atwood 215yards 3TD 19rushing yards
Despite an early deficit Navy fought back to win their first game of the season. Sr QB Brandon Atwood had a efficient day throwing the ball. The senior signal caller threw for 215yards 3TD. In a very rare occurrence the Midshipmen did not have a signal rushing touchdown in the game. Id have to go do some detective work but off the top of my head I do not remember a game in recent years where that has happened. Fortunately the passing game was rolling with Atwood and his receivers. Sr WR Jobe Long led the team with 6rec for 61yards. On the defensive side of the ball Navy put constant pressure on the STAC offense. Sr DL Devyn Martin led the team with 9tk 1.5tfl 0.5sack. Navy hits their bye week before they welcome Mansfield to Annapolis.
STAC had the early lead in this one but couldn’t slow down an efficient Navy passing game. Despite the pressure he faced all day Jr QB Ryan Kenny looked solid in his first game. He threw for 192yards 1TD 1int. Sr ATH Reno Molina picked up where he left of last season. He finished with 71rushing yards 1TD 5rec 56yards. That’s 127 all purpose yards for the senior. Molina is one of the best athletes STAC has and is one of the best multipurpose players in the CSFL. The Spartans defense was led by Soph DL Donnell White and Jr LB Chris Jones. The pair are always making plays for the STAC defense and this game was no different. White finished with 11tk 2.5tfl and Jones finished with 10tk 3tfl. STAC has their bye week before they head to Jersey to visit Caldwell.
