Week 2 Review

CSFL

Penn v Cornell-Penn win 21-9

Player of the game: Fr RB JT Goodman 76yards 2TD

Penn managed to win this back-and-forth game despite the high number of turnovers on both sides and inefficient play from both passing games. Jr QB Ty Scherer went 9-23 with 135yards and 2int. The only thing that seemed to be slightly working was the running game. Fr RB JT Goodman scored the first touchdowns of his career finishing with 76yards and 2TD. Goodman’s 2.9 yards per carry wasn’t great but it was enough to win the game. The Penn defense did enough to stop a slow rolling Cornell offense that was even more inefficient than they were. Soph LB Gavin Griswold led the team with 9tk 1.5tfl 1.5sacks. Soph LB Charles Tauckus wasn’t far behind adding 7tk 1tfl 1sack. Penn hits the road next week to visit Army.

This was not one of the more exciting games of the year. Both offenses struggled mightily but Penn managed to escape with the win. Sr QB Cooper Wise went 9-23 78yards 1TD 2int. Sr RB Ralph Fleuranvil led the team with 58rushing yards. The lone touchdown through the air went to Soph WR Marcos Hernadez. Defensively Max Delahunta led the team with 11tk 1tfl 1sack. Sr DB Jaden Queen had maybe the best game of his career finishing with 6tk 2int 2pbu. Cornell won’t play again until Oct 13th when they welcome Army.

Army v Mansfield- Army win 47-6

Player of the game: Jr RB Henry Beck 128yards 2TD

Army won their first game of the season with a balanced attack from both sides of the ball. Sr QB Mikal Willeke threw for 157yards 2TD in his debut. The star QB showed just how talented he is by making tight window throws and pushing the ball down field all night. Jr RB Henry Beck was the engine for the Army offense finishing with a career high 128yards and 2TD. The defense had a well balanced outing as well. Sr DL Ryan Rast led the team with 7tk 1tfl 1sack and Fr DL Cameron Allen added 3tk 2tfl 2sacks. Army heads home next week to welcome Penn.

Mansfield struggled in this one especially once Jr QB Cahsid Raymond left the game due to a questionable hit. The Jr QB did what he could throwing for 188yards 1TD 2int and adding 51rushing yards. Jr WR Eli Swan had a game high 5rec for 99yards with 1TD. Defensively the Mountaineers got out played up front but there were still some highlights. Sr LB Matt Robert had 11tk 4tfl. Robert moves past all time great LB Jake Myers for the record for most career tackles at Mansfield and the most career tackles in sprint football history. By time this season is over Robert’s numbers may be untouchable. Jr LB Gavin Hinman led the team with a game high 14tk. Mansfield hits the road next week to take on Navy.

Caldwell v CHC- Caldwell win 26-16

Player of the game: Sr QB Frank DeMaio 199yards 4TD 20rushing yards

Caldwell showed how dangerous they can be on both sides of the ball. Sr QB Frank DeMaio threw for 199yards and a career high 4TD. Despite some accuracy issues early, likely because of the wet conditions, DeMaio put the ball on the money when it mattered most. Soph RB Devon Turner once again proved to be an invaluable asset to the Cougars offense finishing with 75rushing yards 2rec 52receiving yards 1TD (127 all- purpose yards). The star RB has picked up right where he left off after a dynamic freshman season. Sr WR Jeremy Colon led the team with 3rec 93yards 2TD. Sr LB Jahmall Readus and Sr DL Ernesto Hernandez led the way for the Cougars defense combing for 17tk 4tfl 3sacks. Jr DB Gennaro Longobardi continues the strong start to his season having his second straight game with 2 interceptions. Caldwell stays home again next week to welcome STAC.

CHC stayed within striking distance but couldn’t do enough to get the win. Soph QB Anthony Cancellare wasn’t as efficient as he was in week one finishing this game with 185yards 1TD 3int. Fr RB Lawrence Howard saw his first collegiate action and made the most of it finishing with a team high 38yards 1TD. Jr TE Nick Ocampo led the team in receiving yards with 58yards on 5receptions. Sr DL Larry Fonville and Soph LB Lex Williams both had 7tackles and 1tfl a piece to lead the Griffins. Next week has their bye next week before the take on STAC in New York.

MSFL

Quincy v Walsh-Quincy win 27-14

Player of the game: Soph DL Bryce Vaught 8tk 3tfl 1sack

Quincy secures their first win of the season. Despite the early struggles the Hawk’s playmakers came through in the end. Soph QB Nick Manzo threw for 190yards 3TD 3int. Despite the turnovers his 3 TD passes proved to be the deciding factor in this one. Fr RB Travon Hegler-Wright led the team in rushing yards with 79. Soph receivers Camden Pye and Exavior Hinton are still the main receiving threats so far in year 2 for the Hawks. The pair combined for 9rec 88yards 2TD. The Hawk’s defense stayed strong despite some push from the Cavaliers. Soph DL Bryce Vaught had the best game of his young career finishing with 8tk 3tfl 1sack. Fr DBs Ja’Quez Hicks and Austin Moore both 1 interception a piece to help secure the win. Quincy heads back home to take on CCSJ next week.

Walsh kept this one close for a while but couldn’t out play the more experienced Quincy team. The passing game was not on point for the Cavaliers. The 3 quarterbacks that played combined for 51yards with 6completions and 2ints. Fr RB Tavion Robinson led the team with 39 yards and Fr ATH Jalen Gordon added 22yards with 1TD. Fr DL Alikwon Harris led the team with 8tk 0.5tfl. The defensive star of the day however was Fr DB Jhordan Peete. The young DB had a career day finishing with 6tk 3int. Peete was consistently competing with Quincy’s top receivers, he made it hard for them to get anything going and despite the loss he still finished with 3 interceptions. Walsh stays home next week to welcome fellow newcomer Oakland City.

SMWC v Oakland City- SMWC win 59-0

Player of the game: Jr RB Keandre Jones 130yards 2TD & Soph RB Patrick Perea 97yards 1TD 2rec 33yards

SMWC dominated in their first ever matchup with Oakland City. The passing game is still in its developmental phases with Jr QB Jeremiah Tosky who threw for 141yards 1TD 2int. The name of the game for the Pomeroys so far this season has been running the ball with their stable of talented running backs. Jr RB Keandre Jones & Soph RB Patrick Perea lit up the field combining for 227rushing yards 3TD with Perea adding 2rec for 33yards. 7 different Pomeroys scored a rushing touchdown with Jones and Perea leading the way. Soph TE Carlos Munoz led the team through the air with 4rec for 40yards. Fr DL Emiliano Gael Bravo was tied for the team lead with 4tk and 3tfl. SMWC heads home next week to welcome Fontbonne.

Oakland City drops their second game in a row to begin their inaugural season. The offense struggled to get anything going failing to register any points in the game. Fr QB Jacob Lee threw for 79yards with 2int. As a team Oakland City only had 24 positive rushing yards. These woes are to be expected when a new team is facing an opponent who has more experience. The offense should continue to improve week to week. Defensively Fr DL Keith Hall had 7tk 3tfl & Fr DB Tyler Young added 7tk 1tfl. Oakland City hits the road next week to visit fellow newcomer Walsh as both teams look for their first win.

Fontbonne v Midway- Fontbonne win 20-13

Player of the game: Soph ATH Chris Reckel 11rec 134yards

Fontbonne continues their strong start to the season leaving this one with a 2-0 record. Fr QB Temaj Taylor threw for 338yards 3TD 2int. The freshman QB has shown a lot of promise to start the season. The main offensive weapon was Soph ATH Chris Reckel who had a career day ending the day with 11rec 134yards. The dynamic athlete also saw some time at QB which he is no stranger to since he played QB for a majority of last season. Reckel is quickly becoming one of the better offensive weapons in Sprint Football. On the defensive side of the ball the Griffins have one of the best players in sprint football Soph LB Avion Bass. The star LB finished with 8tk 4.5tfl 3.5sacks. Bass is putting together what could be an all time great season. Soph LB Clayton Arrowood was right behind him with 8tk 4tfl 2sacks 1 pbu. Fontbonne hits the road next week to take on SMWC in a battle of the undefeated.

Midway showed some life late in this one but couldn’t escape with the victory. The offensive struggles were reminiscent of last season with Midway only having 76yards of total offense. Jr QB Connor Baker threw for 91yards 1TD 1int. As a team Midway ended up with negative rushing yardage. The lack of a running game did not help their efforts in this one. The burst that kept Midway in the game came from the defense specifically Fr DB Savion Lyle-Burney who had an amazing interception return for a 100yard TD. Midway heads home for their home opener against Bellarmine next week

Bellarmine v CCSJ- Bellarmine win 25-14

Player of the game: Soph LB Caleb Murray 6tk 1.5tfl 1ff 1fr

The game was close all the way through. Bellarmine pulled it out in the end thanks to some big defensive plays. Fr QB Luke Worley looked better in week 2 throwing for 115yards but also 2 int. The young QB hasn’t thrown a TD yet this season. The running game wasn’t as spectacular in this one but it was enough to get the win. Fr RB Derrick Gant led the team with 23yards 1TD. Fr WR Tyler Smith led the team with 5rec 47yards. The Knights defense was led by Soph LB Caleb Murray who led the team with 6tk 1.5tfl 1ff 1fr. A fumble recovery from Fr LB Luke Jackson and a late int from Gr LB Devan Hendricks won the game for Bellarmine. The Knights hit the road next week to visit Midway.

CCSJ had the lead for most of the game but the Knights defensive plays proved to be to much for the Crimson Wave. Fr QB Destry Peoples threw for 119yards 1TD 1int. Soph RB Elijah Antis led the team with 91yards 1TD. His 44yard TD run early in the game showed just how electrifying of a player he can be. Soph WR Claijuan Cash had 2rec 58yards 1TD to lead the team. Soph LB Trevor Busse continues to make his presence felt leading the team with 10tk 1tfl 1 ff. Soph DB Quindarius Davis is another guy who continues to make plays. The Soph DB had 2tk with 2int that helped CCSJ take the lead for a while. CCSJ hits the road next week to take on Quincy.
