MSFL
CCSJ v Walsh-CCSJ win 27-6.
Player of the game: Jr DL Tony Madrueno 7tk 6tfl 3sacks
The Crimson Wave start their title defense with a decisive win over Walsh. The Wave have historically been a strong rushing team but on this day the passing game was the main driver of the offense. Jr QB Nino Barbosa threw for 162yards 1TD adding 23yards on the ground. The Jr QB picked up where he left off last season leading CCSJ to a win. Expect Barbosa to be a major catalyst for the Wave offense as the season goes on. Soph WR Stevie Salman led the team in receiving with 4rec 58yards 1TD. On defense CCSJ had their top dogs play lights out. Jr DL Tony Madrueno had a spectacular day finishing with 7tk 6tfl 3sacks. Right behind him was Jr LB Alexander Dellaechaie with 6tk 3.5tfl 2.5sacks. CCSJ will be a heck of a team if their defense keeps playing like this. CCSJ gets a bye before they take on Quincy at home.
Walsh started their second season with a good fight against the defending champs. Fr QB Zack Bowman got his colligate career started by throwing for 174yards 1TD 2int. Despite the loss Bowman showed promise in his first start. The Walsh running game couldn’t get going. The Cavilers finished with just 17yards on the ground as a team. Fr WR Kai James had a great day during his first start. The young receiver had 3rec 88yards 1TD on the day. On the defensive side of the ball more young players showed out during their first starts. Freshman backers Darique Huntley and Ebube Emechebe combined for 12tk 6tfl 2sacks. The two freshmen backers set the tone for the Walsh defense. Walsh will be looking for their first win of the season next week against Bellarmine.
Bellarmine v Quincy- Bellarmine win 27-21
Player of the game: Fr QB Kyle Horvath 258yards 3TD 1int
Bellarmine secured their first win despite Quincy’s valent comeback effort. The Knights took an early lead thanks to the great play from first year QB Kyle Horvath. The freshman QB had as good of a debut as you are going to see throwing for 258yards with 3TD.If this is a sign of things to come then the Knights could be in for their best season yet as a program. The usually strong rushing attack for Bellarmine was consistent enough to help them secure the win. Jr RB Brenden Reid led the team with 74 yards on the ground. The Knights young receiving core gave a well-balanced effort. Fr WR Nathan Kitchens was the leader in this game in that group finishing with 4rec 80yards 2TD. On defense Bellarmine forced turnovers that halted Quincy’s attempts to take back the game. Jr LB Caleb Murray ended the day with 7tk 1int and Soph DB Lance Weiter added 5tk 1pbu and 1int that he returned 45yards to the house. Bellarmine hits the road next week to visit Walsh in Ohio.
Quincy clawed their way back into this game but fell short by the end. The Hawk’s passing attack was led by 2 quarterbacks in this game. Jr Tate Meyer and Soph Deuce Allaway combined for 131yards 1TD 2int. With the weapons that the Hawks have the passing game should improve as the season goes on. On the ground Sr RB CJ Jackson picked up where he left off last year leading the team with 76yards 1TD. He was helped out in the backfield by Gr RB Chance Newton who added 51yards 1TD. Jr WR Nasir Carson was the main target through the air. He led Quincy with 4rec 88yards 1TD. On defense Fr LB Joell Campos led the team with 11tk 0.5tfl. Right behind him Jr DL Noah Getz added 9tk 2tfl. Quincy showed what type of team they can be despite the loss. They will look to rebound at home next week against SMWC.
SMWC v Midway- SMWC win 41-19
Player of the game: Jr QB Jeremiah Tosky 267yards 2TD 1int/ Fr LB Brandon Washington 12tk 1tfl 1int 1TD
SMWC had a fight on their hands early in this game. The Pomeroys were down 17-13 at halftime. That chance to reset was what SMWC needed because they started rolling ending the game on a 28-2 run in the second half. Jr QB Jeremiah Tosky threw for 267yards 2TD 1int. The Pomeroy’s offense will be electrifying once again with Tosky at the helm. The rushing attack for SMWC was not as dominant as usual. The Pomeroys were held under 100 yards as a team, but Soph RB Derron Hazzard did manage to score on the ground. The Pomeroy receivers showed off their big play ability throughout the day. Soph WR Claijuan Cash was the leading receiver with 1rec 79yards 1TD. Right behind him was Fr WR Marques Reese who added 5rec 70yards. Midway jumped on the defending champs in the first half on this week 1 game. However, things feel apart for Midway as the game went on. Midway was able to move the ball through the air with their two QBs throughout the game. Fr Christian Carter and Soph Keegan Hill combined for 234yards 1TD 3int. It didn’t help the Eagles efforts that two of the interceptions were returned for touchdowns but Midway showed that they are a capable passing team. The ground game wasn’t very viable. Midway rushed for 78 yards as a team with no scores. The receivers on the other hand made their presence felt. Fr WR Chase Williams led the team with 3rec 87yards 1TD. Soph WR Dameon Miller-Duerson was also very effective finishing with 6rec 69yards. Defensively Soph DE Trenton Leach had 7tk 1tfl 1sack and Gr DL Gavin Lay added 7tackles.
