Week 2 Review

CSFL

Chestnut Hill v Caldwell-CHC win 28-6

Player of the game:Jr DL Jonathan Havrilak 6tk 3tfl

The Griffins opened up their season with a win against a new look Caldwell team. CHC started off hot finding the endzone on their first three possessions. Jr QB Anthony Cancellare threw for 110yards 3TD 2int. The passing game wasn’t as explosive as the Griffins would have liked but with it being the first game and playing against a good secondary CHC will take this type of performance. The best part of the day for CHC was the success of the ground game. Soph RB Lawrence Howard led the team in rushing with 84yards. With some additional yards added by Cancellare and Fr RB Xavier Limehous the Griffins ended the game with 167yards on the ground. Jr Wr Kyree Griffin and Sr Wr Xavier Hendrick were the top targets through the air. The pair combined for 6rec 78yards 1TD. On the defensive side of the ball Jr DL Jonathan Havrilak led the team with 6tk 3tfl. The Griffins hit the road next week to visit Army.

Caldwell opened up their new era with a loss on the road. The Cougars used three quarterbacks as they tried to find their rhythm in this first game. The most successful of the three quarterbacks was Sr Anthony Haines who threw for 106yards 1TD. The rushing attack wasn’t there for the Cougars as they only rushed for 26yards. Jr WR Arjun Petgrave led the team with 4rec 93yards 1TD. Petgrave’s big 58yard reception was the Cougars biggest play of the night. On defense the Cougars secondary led the way. Fr DB Kyle Lewis led the team with 8tk 1tfl. Sr DB Amajuwan Murray added 8tk 1ff 1int 1pbu. Caldwell has their bye week before they hit the road again to take on Molloy.

Mansfield v Navy- Navy win 31-26

Player of the game: Soph RB Hunter Gennicks 224yards 3TD

Despite the halftime deficit Navy managed to come back and win their first game of the season behind strong offensive line play and a great performance by their star running back. The passing attack led by first year starter Sr Luke Wagner generated 125yards with 1int. Navy relied heavily on the legs of Soph RB Hunter Gennicks who had a career day finishing with 224yards 3TD. The young back looked like he was gliding up and down the field all day as he gashed the Mansfield defense. As we predicted it looks like Navy has their next star in the backfield. On the defensive side of the ball Sr LB Jake Wolinski led the team with 8tk 1.5tfl. Navy heads home next week to take on Cornell.

Mansfield showed up with their new look team and did not disappoint. The Mountaineers rolled out with 2 quarterbacks on offense. Fr Marcus Quaker and Sr star Cahsid Raymond. While Quaker threw for 116yards 1int Raymond threw the lone passing touchdown of the day. Where Raymond really shined was as the main offensive weapon. The all-time great at Mansfield threw for a touchdown, ran for 182yards, including a record break 99yard TD run, and caught 5passes for 41yards. Raymond is already one of the greatest players in sprint football history. If his usage is going to be like this for the rest of the season, he may enter a class all his own when his career is done. Defensively Fr LB Jackson Taylor led the team with 13tk 0.5tfl. Mansfield hits the road to visit Penn next Week.

Cornell v Molloy-Cornell win 53-7

Player of the game: Sr ATH Evan Nicholas 49yards 2TD 5rec 54yards 1TD

Cornell jumped out to an early lead against the new Molloy team and managed to break their 8-game losing streak. Jr QB Max Spero led the team with 152passing yards. The first-year starter also added 2 rushing touchdowns. The leading rusher on the day was Sr RB Kevin Lopez who ran for 72yards 1TD. Cornell took advantage when they were in the redzone and ran for 6 rushing touchdowns as a team. Besides add 2 rushing touchdowns himself Sr Evan Nicholas led the team in receiving with 5rec 54yards 1TD. Defensively Soph DB Eliot Kim, Jr LB Michael Moiser, and Soph LB Thomas Shegogue each had 5 tackles to lead the team. Cornell hits the road next week to visit Navy.

Molloy’s youth showed in their inaugural game on the road. That is to be expected as the young team goes through the ups and downs of a first season. Jr QB Paulie Drummond led the team in his first start with 113yards 1TD 2int. The running game for the Lions were only able to rush for 51yards as a team. What also didn’t help their efforts was the number of turnovers committed by the offense. The 5 turnovers gave the ball back to Cornell often with a short field knocking on the door of the redzone. Jr WR Peter Schoenermarck led the team with 3rec 81yards 1TD. On defense Fr LB Anothony DiSalvo led the team with 7tk. The Lions head home next week to welcome STAC for their first home game as a program.

STAC v Penn -Penn win 24-0

Player of the game: Fr QB Mike Malone 120yards 1int 53 rushing yards 3TD

Penn pitched a shutout in their first road game of the season. A rejuvenated offense with Fr QB Mike Malone looked better than the offense during any game last season. The young signal caller threw for 120 yards with 1int. Where Malone had a big impact on the game was with his legs. Malone ran for 53yards 3TD. Whenever the Penn offense was approaching or in the redzone having Malone run the ball was the best course of action for the Quakers. Soph RB JT Goodman added 66 rushing yards. Sr WR Kyle Zeitlan led the team with 2rec 51yards. Jr LB Ryan Horvath led the team with 7tk. Sr DB Adrian Montemayor and Sr DL Cam Janock combined for 11tk 2tfl 2sacks. Penn heads home to welcome Mansfield.

STAC had chances to get the game under control, but multiple penalties halted their comeback efforts. Sr QB Ryan Kenny looked like his usual self. The star gun slinger threw for 218yards 1int. Kenny did throw two touchdowns that were both called back because of penalties. If those scores go on the board, then who knows how the flow of the game changes. The Spartan’s running game was not able to get going against a strong Penn front seven. STAC didn’t even try to use their running backs. Kenny led the team in attempts with 11 and couldn’t gain any positive yards. Soph WR Savion Williams led the team with 10rec 75yards. Defensively Soph LB Jojo Miranda led the team with 13tk 1.5tfl. Right behind him was Jr DB Ethan Hence who added 10tk. Next week the Spartans hit the road to play against instate newcomer Molloy.

MSFL

Oakland City v Midway-Oakland City win 14-0

Player of the game: Soph DL Andrew Brown 4tk 3tfl 2sacks

The Oaks went into their first game of the season searching for the program’s first win. With timely plays on offense and a lights out defense the Oaks overcame their slow start to break the seal and win for the first time as a team. Fr QB Daniel Honeycutt threw for 152yards 1TD in his debut. The young QB showed signs of what he can develop into as the season goes on. Fr RB Lamar Moore led the way on the ground rushing for 69yards. As a team the Oaks were very effective finishing the game with 144rush yards 1TD. Soph WR Devontay Gilbert led the team in receiving with 4rec 73yards 1TD. Soph DL Andrew Brown had the best game of his career finishing with 4tk 3tfl 2sacks. The Oaks stay home again next week as the welcome Walsh.

Midway struggled in their second game of the season. After starting out hot last week against the defending champs the Eagles weren’t able to carry that momentum into this one. The Midway offense was barely able to generate any positive offensive yards. Soph QB Keegan Hill only threw for 53yards. As a team Midway could only create 6 positive rushing yards. On the defensive side of the ball Midway did manage to hold their own as long as they could. Jr LB Luke Guerro led the team with 8tk. Soph DE Peyton Brazier held it down up front finishing with 8tk 3tfl. Midway heads home next week for an in-state matchup with Bellarmine.

Quincy v SMWC-SMWC win 48-26

Player of the game: Jr QB Jeremiah Tosky 348yards 5TD

The Pomeroy’s first two opponents have given them all they can handle during the 1st half of their two games. However, the 2nd half of both of the games have been different stories. After going into the locker room tied 20-20 SMWC outscored the Hawks 28-6 in the second half. Jr QB Jeremiah Tosky had a great game throwing the ball. The star general threw for 348yards 5TD. Not to be out done the Pomeroy’s running game was spectacular as well. Spearheaded by Soph RB Derron Hazzard who ran for a career high 129yards 2TD. The weapons on the outside did their part as well. Speedy Fr WR Marques Reese led the team with 8rec 134yards 1TD. His running partner Jr WR Devron Johnson consistently made contested catches all afternoon. Johnson finished with 7rec 107yards 2TD. On the flipside Fr LB Brandon Washington led the team with 6tk. Soph LB Holtman Doades added 5tk 1tfl 1pbu. SMWC have their bye before they take on Oakland City at home.

Quincy looked like they were going to go blow for blow with the Pomeroys all game. But in the second half the Hawks could keep up the high powered SMWC offense. Soph QB Deuce Allaway threw for 270yards 2TD 2int. The young QB has shown the ability to push the ball down the field but he has struggled with turnovers so far this season. The Quincy rushing game was led by their star back CJ Jackson. The Sr led the team with 73 rushing yards. The biggest offensive threat for the Hawk this season has been Jr WR Nasir Carson. The big play threat has a great performance once again this time finishing with 5rec 144yards 2TD. On defense Jr DL Noah Getz led the team with 9tk 3tfl 1sack 1pbu. Next week the Hawks head home to welcome CCSJ.

Walsh v Bellarmine-Bellarmine win 37-0

Player of the game: Fr QB Kyle Horvath 237yards 2TD

Bellarmine used a combination of explosive offense and stout defense to dominate this game from start to finish. The Knight’s passing game was impressive once again with Fr QB Kyle Horvath at the helm. The young QB threw for 237yards 2TD. Jr RB Brenden Reid led the team in rushing yards with 82yards 1TD. With the emergence of this explosive passing game Reid has not had to carry the entire offensive workload this season. However, he has still been very effective when his number has been called. The young Knights receivers made plays all day for their freshman QB. Sophomores Shannon Tonge and Tyler Smith combined for 10rec 207yards 2TD. The pair have been on a tear to start the season. Defensively the Knights prevented Walsh from doing much of anything. Jr DB Vernon Duncan led the team with 8tk 2tfl. Soph LB Luke Jackson added 5tk 2tfl 2sacks. Soph LB Tyree Thomas had the best game of his career finishing with 5tk 4tfl 2sacks 1ff 1fr. Bellarmine hits the road again next week to visit Midway.

Walsh continues to struggle to start the season. Offensively the Knights defensive prevented the Cavaliers from getting any sort of momentum going. The Walsh offense only generated 23 positive yards which came through the air. Running wise the team ended with -31 rushing yards. On defense Fr DB Devin Burgess led the team with 9tk 1pbu. Walsh will need to address issues on both sides of the ball if they hope to salvage their season. Walsh will matchup up with Oakland City next week.
