The Shape of Sprint:DL/LB

The Hybrid Defender

These are the players that are too versatile to leave at just one spot. They are able to make a huge impact by doing different things for their defense. Whether that be run stuffing as a tackle or an end, pass rushing from the edge or the middle, or lining up as a down end or stand up backer. It doesn’t matter what these players are asked to do, they have the talent to excel at multiple positions.

(CSFL) Mansfield 18-22 DL/LB Chase Moser 145tk 46.5tfl 16sacks 1int 4pbu

Moser was a staple on some of the best defenses that Mansfield has ever had. His versatility allowed him to excel as a defensive tackle, defensive end, and outside linebacker. While Moser was there the Mountaineers defense ascended to new heights. Great size for all three positions and a relentless motor made Moser a matchup nightmare throughout his career. Moser ended his career as one of the most productive and versatile defenders in sprint football history.

(CSFL) Navy 16-19 LB/DL Troy Monroe 108tk 39.5tfl 20sacks 2int 13pbu

Monroe was an outstanding edge player for the Mids. His long frame made it hard for quarterbacks to complete passes over him once he got his arms up to try and contest a pass. When Monroe wasn’t batting down passes he was was using his elite size to torment offensive tackles and ball carriers. It was no strange occurrence to see Monroe reach across what felt like the entire defense to pull down a running back for a tackle for loss or sack a retreating quarterback. Monroe left a strong legacy as one of the best edge defenders the game has ever seen.

(CSFL) Mansfield 13-17 LB/DL Dyan Flexer 150tk 31.5tfl 16sacks 1int 5pbu

Flexer played a major role in helping to get Mansfield headed in the right direction as a program. He was the best front seven defensive player on his Mansfield teams. He made plays as a mike backer, outside backer, and defensive end. Flexer was at his best during the second half of his career when he could move all around the defense throughout the game. As a pass rusher Flexer used his quickness to set up his pass rush moves while he played with maximum effort. Flexer is one of the most well rounded and versatile defenders we have seen in the modern day game.

(CSFL) STAC 18-21 DL/LB Tyreke Smith 139tk 24tfl 7.5sacks

Smith is the greatest defensive player to ever play for the Spartans. His presence alone gave opposing offenses something to think about. Smith held down the edge as a defensive end for the Spartans for most of his career. In the final chapters of his career Smith was able to affect the game as a line backer that was able to play both inside and outside. Aggression and drive were what made Smith a remarkable player. He was known for being a very consistent and productive run defender. Smith left his mark on the Spartans and CSFL.
