The Shape of Sprint:QB
Mobile Play Extenders
These are the quarterbacks that excel in making plays with their mobility and accuracy. These guys can be threats on the ground but just as often they will use their legs to extend plays and find open receivers down field. They are able to produce from the pocket but can also quickly flip a switch and use their mobility to evade incoming defenders. Defenses have to respect these quarterbacks ability to run but also have to worry about passes once the quarterback has broken the pocket.
(MSFL) SMWC (active) QB Jeremiah Tosky 3912yards 38TD 218rushing yards 8TD
In just two seasons Tosky has already climbed up the quarterback record books. The Pomeroy’s signal caller has led his team to back-to-back championship game appearances. A strong arm, quick release, and accuracy in and out of the pocket has made Tosky one of the best quarterbacks in sprint football history. Tosky’s ability to make every throw on the field makes it hard for opposing defenses to take something away. Tosky is also capable of using his legs to keep drives alive or get the the endzone. With another year or two to add to his career Tosky has a chance to continue to grow his already great legacy in sprint football.
(CSFL) Caldwell 19-23 QB Frank DeMaio 2774yards 25TD 447rushing yards 7TD
Demaio ended his career as Caldwell’s all-time leader in every passing category. With DeMaio at the helm Caldwell had their most successful era in program history. The mobile quarterback was able to uses his legs on designed rollouts, broken plays, and scrambles to gash defenses. When DeMaio was at his best the Cougars were a dangerous team to defend. As a set thrower DeMaio was always able to do what his team needed. He could make throws on all three levels and was excellent when taking shots with some play action to take advantage of the Cougars run heavy philosophy. DeMaio had something to say during a time where there were a ton of talented quarterbacks in sprint football.
(CSFL) Navy 20-23 QB Brandon Atwood 2802yards 32TD 810rushing yards 9TD
Atwood was an anomaly while he was playing for Navy. The Midshipmen have a strong tradition of running the ball and having elite running backs come through the program. The quarterback room does not quite have the same legacy. Atwood is a strong contender for the best quarterback to ever play for Navy. His strong frame and toughness made him a great runner, but he also had the arm strength to push the ball down the field. He did not have elite accuracy but he completed more than enough passes for his team to be successful. Atwood played with a rugged nature that he used
(CSFL) Penn 19-22 QB Andrew Paolini 2881yards 28TD 265rushing yards 9TD
Paolini is the most recent name in a long line of talented quarterbacks to play for the Quakers. Great accuracy on the move, sneaky speed, and good decision making were the highlights of Paolini’s game. He was lucky enough to play with some of the best players at their position at that time. While his numbers and performance did take a dip once these players moved on. Paolini was still able to be effective and show how other guys with his attributes can get the job done.
(CSFL) Penn 08-11 QB Todd Busler 4423yards 45TD 412rushing yards 12TD
Busler is the player that started the greatest legacy of quarterback play we have ever seen in sprint football. The Busler to McCurdy to Jenkins to Paolini streak is something we won’t see for a long time. Busler laid the groundwork and set the standard of success at the quarterback position for Penn. Pinpoint accuracy and a nice set of wheels allowed Busler to have success in many different ways. He could go off script and make something happen or stay in the pocket a deliver strikes down field. Busler sits at the top of our game as one of the best quarterbacks to ever play sprint football.
