Week 1 Review
MSFL
CCSJ v Quincy: CCSJ win 18-0
Player of the game- Sr LB Trevor Busse 11tk 1tfl
CCSJ opened their season with a dominant performance on the defensive side of the ball holding Quincy to 0 points in the first game of the year. On offense the Wave didn’t click the way they would have wanted but they were still able to get the job done. Jr QB Destry Peoples got the start throwing for 64yards with 1TD. The junior struggled to find consistency throughout the game with his lone touchdown coming from a screen pass thrown to Jr RB Jamall Warnell. Star QB Nino Barbosa was used as a swiss army knife instead of the quarterback role he has played the last two seasons. While Barbosa did not throw a pass, he still did impact the offense. The star senior ran for 25 yards and 1TD, he also caught 3 passes for 16 yards and had a 37yard kick return. Barbosa finished with 78 all-purpose yards and 1TD. It will be interesting to see how the CCSJ coaching staff plans to use Barbosa throughout the season. Jr RB Kaydarious Jones led the team on the ground with 105yards.On defense the wave was led by the usual leaders. Sr LB Trevor Busse led the team with 11tk 1tfl. Sr LB Josh Tejeda added 6tk 1tfl and Sr LB/S Jared Cuevas Cottrell chipped in 5tk 1int. The Crimson Wave head home next week to take on Oakland City.
Quincy was able to string together some positive plays, but it wasn’t enough to overcome CCSJ’s stifling defense. Sr QB Nick Manzo got the start in the opener. He threw for 122yards 1int. Hoping for a spark the Hawks switched to Jr Deuce Allaway who couldn’t find any great success finishing the game with no completions and 1int. Sr RB CJ Jackson led the team with 38yards on the ground. Jackson will be a main catalyst for the Hawks offense throughout the season, but the standout RB couldn’t pop one as the CCSJ defense swarmed every time he touched the ball. Jr Nasir Carson led the team on the outside with 2rec 45yards. On defense Jr LB Donnell Packer had a game high 14tk 1.5tfl. Jr DL Kaden Buchholz was right behind finishing the game with 9tk 2.5tfl. Quincy hits the road next week to visit SMWC.
SMWC vs Midway: SMWC win 52-36
Player of the game- Sr QB Jeremiah Tosky 412yards 4TD 1rushing TD
The Pomeroy’s looked very dangerous on offense in their first game of the season. Sr QB Jeremiah Tosky was firing on all cylinders finishing the game with 412yards 4TD and he also add 1 rushing TD. Whatever questions there may have been with the changes in the wide receiver room were quickly dispelled as Tosky spread the ball around and found his new go to targets. SMWC did not rely on their usually balanced offensive attack, the Pomeroys only rushed for 45 yards as a team. The lack of punch on the ground didn’t hinder the spectacular offensive day. Soph WR Owen Huff has the best game of his young career leading the team with 6rec 171yards 1TD. Jr WR Dameon Miller made his presence felt with 9rec 88yard 1TD. Defensively the Pomeroy’s had a mix of new faces and seasoned returners step up. Fr DB Bryan Simmons had a huge debut leading the team with 7tk 3int 1pbu. Simmons returned one of the interceptions 95 yards to the house to seal the game. Soph DL Peyton Brazier added 4tk 2tfl 1sack. SMWC head home next week to welcome Quincy.
For the second year in a row Midway had a back-and-forth game with SMWC to start the season. Despite the record-breaking day, the Eagles came up short. Soph QB Christian Carter did all he could to keep his team in it. The young QB threw for 320yards 4TD 3int and was the team’s leading rusher with 96 yards on the ground. If Carter’s performance in this game is a sign of things to come then Midway should have one of the most potent offenses in the MSFL this season. Soph WR Ayden Bauwens and Fr WR Quincy Barber were nearly unstoppable. The pair combined for 13rec 234yards 4TD. The duo quickly made their presence felt and should be main focuses for defenses moving forward. On defense Jr DB Tyler Guyton led the team with 6tk. Midway hits to road next week to visit Bellarmine.
Bellarmine v Oakland City: Bellarmine win 43-0
Player of the game- Jr WR Tyler Smith 5rec 103yards 2TD
After a scoreless first half Bellarmine got things rolling with a safety and didn’t look back. Fr QB Dylan Morris made his college debut and did not disappoint. The young QB threw for 168yards 2TD. Morris was sharp with his decision making and timing finishing the game 14/18. On the ground the Knights were led by their workhorse Sr RB Brenden Reid. The star senior ran for 92yards 2TD and also added 2rec for 25yards. Reid will be a major focus for the Bellarmine offense as the season goes on. Another player who did not disappoint was Jr WR Tyler Smith. The go to receiver for the Knights had a game high 103yards on 5rec for 2TD. Smith is one of the best receivers in sprint football and proved that in this season opener. Defensively the Knights suffocated Oakland City. Fr DB Kori Woods led the team with 5tk 1tfl 1int. Wood’s returned his interception 45 yards for a touchdown. Fr DL Bryce Bullock added 4tk and took a fumble recovery 30 yards for a touchdown. Bellarmine heads home next week for a matchup against Midway.
Oakland City couldn’t find much success on either side of the ball in their season opener. Fr quarterbacks Braeden Ellis and Jake Miller struggled in their debut. The pair combined for 97 yards 1int going 11 for 24. The Oaks will need better performances for their signal callers if the hope to make some noise this season. One bright spot for the Oaks offense was Jr RB Robert Lamar. The tailback led the team with 50 rushing yards 5rec and 41 receiving yards. Lamar was the Oaks sole source of offensive production in the game. On the defensive side of the ball Jr DL Brandon Long led the team with 8tk 1tfl 1sack. Jr LB Kanye Johnson showed up finishing the game with 6tk 3tfl 1sack. Oakland City hits to road next week to visit CCSJ.
