2022 Watch List (DB)

Army Sr CB Sam Whipple- 10tk 2int 7pbu

Whipple is my type of defensive back. He is a man-to-man type of corner who will often get assigned to cover the opposing team’s best receiver. He was top three in the CSFL in passes broken up and had a sub 40% completion percentage when targeted. Whipple reminds me of former Army CB Desmond Young who finished his career as one of the best corners to ever play in the CSFL. If Whipple can have a strong final season, he could leave a similar legacy behind for future corners to look up to.

Caldwell Soph CB Kyle Readus -7tk 1int 4pbu

Readus is another guy who had a sub 40% completion percentage when targeted. He did this as a freshman which makes that even more impressive. Readus is another man-to-man corner who can lock down his guy or his side of the field. He started his career off great, if he can continue to improve, we could be watching an all-time great corner forge an incredible legacy.

STAC Jr CB Shawn Benard – 15tk 1int 8pbu

Benard proved he was one of the best corners in the CSFL in his first season. Like most of the guys on this list he hit the elite sub 40% completion percentage when targeted benchmark. There only a handful of guys each year who finish the season hitting that number, doing that in his first season is a testament to his ability as a corner. Expect Benard to continue to improve and lead the STAC defense as their lockdown corner.

CHC Soph CB/S Dimitri Laylor – 34tk 3TFL 1int 3pbu

Last season Laylor showed how valuable his versatility can be for the CHC defense. The young defensive back played safety and corner last year for the Griffins finishing the season as one of the few bright spots defensively. Going into his second season Laylor should be one of the better defensive players at CHC. His improvement could help jump start a CHC return to relevance in the CSFL.

Caldwell Jr CB Tyquil Anderson-10tk 2int 4pbu

Anderson and Kyle Readus made for a great corner back tandem last season. Both players finished right at or below 40% completion percentage when targeted. Anderson is the shorter of the two but that didn’t stop him from making big plays on often times bigger receivers. It’s very rare for teams to have two to notch corners playing together. Navy’s Grant Hooper and Adam Weissenfels (2018-2020) come to mind as well as CHC’s Nate Moser and Terrell Bush (2016-2020). Anderson and Readus will play a major role as Caldwell look to continue their winning ways.
