Quincy vs Bellarmine: Quincy win 28-21

Player of the game- Soph QB Kiet Truong 268yards 3TD 2int

Bellarmine jumped out to an early lead, but they could not hold off a surging Hawks team that battled their way back. Soph QB Kiet Truong had one of the best games of his career so far ending the day with 268yards 3TD 2int. Despite the 2 interceptions the young quarterback was sharp for most of the game making great throws and getting the ball to his playmakers. On the ground Sr Trevon Hegler-Wright made a statement leading the way with 93yards. Hegler-Wright did exit the game a few times with what looked like a shoulder injury, but the senior running back refused to be denied as he reentered the game each time. The main play maker on the outside was Sr WR Nasir Carson. The explosive receiver made his mark leading the team with 6rec 118yards 1TD. On defense the Hawks were led by their veteran playmakers. Gr LB Donnell Packer led the team with 11tk 2tfl 1ff 1fr 1pbu. Sr DB Thomas Murray Jr added 3tk 1int 1pbu. Packer and Murray’s leadership and timely playmaking went a long way in helping the Hawks secure the win. Quincy stays home to welcome CCSJ next week.

Bellarmine had early control in this game but couldn’t finish with the victory. The highly anticipated return of Jr QB Kyle Horvath did not go as planned for the Knights. Horvath finished with 104yards 2TD 1int. He was also the team’s leading rusher ending the day with 37yards 1TD. Horvath still has the ability to be one of the best quarterbacks in the game, but he and the rest of the Bellarmine offense will need to polish up if the hope to get things back on track this season. Fr WR Aaron Hampton caught the early touchdown pass and finished the game with 3rec 23yards 1TD. On defense Knight’s defenders were flying around but they struggled to stop the Hawks offense. Sr DB Brady Niemeyer led the way with 9tk 2.5tfl 1sack. Soph DB Da’coldus Fields showed up ending the game with 7tk 1int 3pbu. Bellarmine hits the road again next week to take on Midway in a Kentucky rivalry game.

Midway vs CCSJ: Midway win 38-24

Player of the game- Jr DL Trenton Leach 7tk 2.5tfl 2sacks

Midway started off cold in this season opener but found their footing in the 2nd half. Jr QB Christian Carter did not look like himself in the first half, but he eventually got things going. Carter finished with 173yards 3TD 3int. Fr RB Bayubahe Benit led the way on the ground with 53yards. Despite this not being their best day the Eagle’s receiving core made plays when they needed. Soph WR Isaiah Mattingly finished the game with 1rec 60yards 1TD. Jr WR Chase Williams added 3rec 43yards 1TD. The CCSJ defense can take some credit for disrupting the potent Midway offense. I expect them to look much more polished as the season goes on. On defense the Midway defenders were flying around getting stops and making plays. Jr LB Kaleb Chase led the team with 8tk 0.5tfl. Jr DL Trenton Leach had a disruptive day up front finishing with 7tk 2.5tfl 2sacks 1pbu.Sr DB Keegan Hill impacted the game from the secondary ending with 5tk 1tfl 1int 1pbu. Sr DB Mike Anderson also left his impact on the game adding 4tk 1int (28yard TD). Midway heads to take on Bellarmine for their classic Kentucky battle.

The Crimson Wave had Midway right where they wanted them but once the dam broke, they could not get the game back. Soph QB Zayne Guthrie had some flashes in his first start. Guthrie finished with 149yards 2TD 1int. The usually dominant CCSJ run game was held in check. Jr RB Zaire Davis led the team with 52yards. The star for the Crimson Wave in this game was Sr WR Tre Simmons. The senior wideout had maybe the best game of his career leading the team with 10rec 116yards 1TD. On defense CCSJ started strong but once Midway got going things fell apart. Soph DB Isaiah Kish led the team with 7tk 1pbu. Fr DL Reggie Miller added 4tk 1tfl 1sack. Soph LB CJ Wright added 4tk 2tfl 1sack. Soph LB Aiden Wolgemuth, Fr LB Teon Miller, and Jr DB Marcus Hardy all added 1 interception. CCSJ graduated a ton of talent on both sides of the ball and that was clear in this first game as many players made their first start. This program and coaching staff are no strangers to overcoming a slow early season start. I’m confident that they will adjust and be competitive as the season goes on. CCSJ hits to road to take on Quincy next week.
